Level 2 Pathway at Mirfield College

A supportive step forward

We understand that exams don’t always go to plan – and that academic progress doesn’t always follow a straight line. You may have faced challenges that affected your GCSE results, or you might simply need a bit more time and support to reach the next stage.

Our Level 2 programme offers a tailored, one-year course that helps students build up the qualifications, study habits and personal confidence needed to move on to further education, employment or apprenticeships.

Who is the Level 2 Pathway for?

This one-year programme is designed for students who:

  • Achieved below a grade 4 in both GCSE English and Maths
  • Want a new start in a calm, structured and supportive setting
  • Are ready to engage with a varied, practical curriculum
  • Are keen to gain qualifications that open the door to Level 3 study or employment
It’s a focused and guided pathway, designed to help you build confidence, develop skills and move forward with purpose.

What will I study?

All students on our Level 2 Pathway follow the same programme:
  • GCSE English Language resit
  • GCSE Maths resit
  • Level 2 Certificate in Public Services (must be studied with Art & Design)
  • Level 2 Certificate in Art & Design Skills
  • Life Skills Programme (including careers, wellbeing and personal development)
Together, these subjects offer a mix of academic, practical and creative learning – helping students discover their strengths, prepare for life beyond college and keep future options open.

The duration of this pathway is 1 year and after successfully completing the year, students are eligible to apply for a Level 3 Vocational Pathway.

Level 2 Public Services
This course introduces you to the wide range of careers in public services – such as the police, fire service, ambulance, armed forces and more – while also developing vital transferable skills. Units include:
  • Employment in Uniformed Public Services
  • Health & Fitness for Service Entry
  • Navigation & Expedition Skills
  • Law, Crime & Community
  • Cyber Security
  • Attending Emergency Incidents
  • Security Procedures
  • Interview Preparation & Professional Behaviour

You’ll also build confidence in teamwork, leadership, communication and problem-solving.

Level 2 Art & Design Skills
This creative course gives you the freedom to explore and refine your artistic skills through a range of disciplines, including:
  • Image and mark-making
  • Fashion and textiles
  • 3D design and product
  • Film, video and moving image
  • Graphics and digital communication
The course is built around five key areas: Investigation, Communication, Practical Skills, Development and Approach. These help you grow your creative abilities – but also give you transferable skills. These are skills you can use in lots of different jobs or courses, not just in art and design. For example, learning how to communicate ideas clearly, solve problems, or work independently will help you whether you go into creative media, business, or even start your own company one day. It’s all about building skills that open up more options for your future.
GCSE English and Maths Resits
If you’re feeling unsure about resitting English or Maths, you’re not alone. At Mirfield College, we offer small, supportive classes with experienced teachers who understand how to help you grow in confidence. We focus on building your skills step by step, at your pace, so you can feel proud of the progress you make.
