Behaviour

Character Development
“Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”
Martin Luther King
At The MFG, we develop character through a rigorous and stretching academic education, alongside outstanding wider personal development. We want our students to leave the Academy as well-educated and well-rounded individuals, ready to take their place in the world of work. We help students to grasp what is ethically important in situations and how to act for the right reasons, so that they become more autonomous and reflective. Effective character education will have a legacy far beyond the school gates, impacting young people as friends, neighbours, parents, team members and employees, benefitting both the individuals themselves, their wider communities and broader society.

The MFG Character is based on the six pillars of Tenacity, Health, Equity, Morality, Flourish, Generosity. It has been designed to help students develop key character traits that will build confidence and self-belief, a sound moral compass and respect for others.

THEMFG Morality

Behaviour for Learning
The MFG Character defines Morality as: a set of standards that determines right from wrong. The MFG Character Curriculum enables students to:
  • Understand the consequences of their behaviour and actions
  • Develop interest in investigating and offering reasoned views about moral and ethical issues and ability to understand and appreciate the viewpoints of others on these issues
  • Recognise the difference between right and wrong and to readily apply this understanding in their own lives, and to recognise legal boundaries and, in doing so, respect the civil and criminal law of England
Through our consistent application of our Morality expectations and the delivery of our character curriculum, our students are taught what it means to be a great learner and an outstanding citizen.

Behaviour Expectations

Students are expected to conduct themselves in a polite, respectful manner at all times, displaying THEMFG values in their actions; this includes lessons, social times, travelling to and from the Academy and enrichment activities.
To ensure that the Academy’s expectations are clear to all stakeholders, the Morality Behaviour for Learning expectations are clearly displayed around the Academy. When choosing not to follow these expectations, students will face a consequence. Students are expected to take responsibility for their own behaviour and accept the consequence when they make poor choices. Students who consistently breach the Academy’s standards may find themselves banned from taking part in additional enrichment opportunities such as trips/visits, rewards, school productions and representing the Academy in any sporting event or other activity.

Rewarding Positive Behaviour

We strongly believe that students should be regularly and fairly rewarded for their achievements, to not only celebrate students’ successes, but to also inspire and motivate young people to achieve their very best and become confident, independent learners and responsible citizens. We offer a range of rewards that link directly to our values and include recognition for the following:
  • academic achievement and progress
  • good attendance and punctuality
  • contributions to the classroom and the whole Academy community
  • demonstrating any of the school values of Tenacity, Health, Equity, Morality, Flourish and Generosity
  • a consistently positive attitude
  • significant improvement in attitude or achievement
A range of rewards are given including:
  • Verbal praise
  • Certificates and badges, reward trips and prom
  • Front of lunch queue pass
  • Positive Points
  • Positive phones calls/postcards home
  • Individual and whole class rewards (e.g. vouchers, rewards in assemblies, trips) on a regular basis
  • Recognition in assemblies and at presentation evenings
  • Celebration and public recognitions of achievements of individuals, teams or classes
